August 11th is President’s Joke Day!

It was on this in 1984 that just before his regularly scheduled Saturday radio address that President Ronald Reagan was doing a voice test with the microphone.  He didn’t think that the mike and the feed were live, so as a joke he spoke into the microphone, “My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever.  The bombing begins in five minutes.” Well the joke was on him because he was in fact speaking into a live feed!

This incident led to the creation of President’s Joke Day.  Seeing how it came about,  it is hard to say if today is a day for presidents to make jokes to to be joked about. Maybe a little bit of both!
