Why it’s Sewing Machine Day!

I’m not exactly sure why, but since it is, it gives me an opportunity to share something nifty I hand made using, you guess it, my sewing machine!

This Oscar de la Renta pillow is hand crafted from a large square silk scarf featuring old fashioned time pieces.  The designer name is printed at one of the corners. I fell in love with this vintage accessory and decided to make four pillows from it. What you see is in the photograph is approximately one forth of the original scarf.  I used soft-to-the-touch moleskin suede backing in a matching blue.

These totally unique square pillows make perfect accent pieces most anywhere in your home.  Check out my other creations under Necktie Pillows.

Happy Happy Mothers Day!

In fact, I just found out that May 9th through the 16th is “Salute to Moms 35+ Week”, so today can be extended to an all week celebration for a lot of women! Of course, I believe that kids, husbands and boyfriends (of single moms) can show their appreciation to their moms, wives and girlfriends everyday!

Most moms probably don’t wear ties, but they would probably love something crafted from them, such as this decorative basket weave pillow handmade from 26 neckties! I combined the thin ends of black, white and gray men’s ties and woven them 13 across and 13 down to create this one-of-a-kind masterpiece. It didn’t matter if they were designer ties or no name neckwear so long as they matched in color.

This unique necktie can be grouped with other toss pillows but it is so stunning, it is best to let it shine as a stand alone work of art! Check out our other handmade basketweave pillows for a look like no other!

It’s National Train Day!

This unique toss pillow is hand made from three men’s neckties by yours truly! Yes, I am also a crafter who specializes in pillows and sachets handmade from neckties.

I knew exactly what I was going to do when I spotted a modern tie depicting two trains heading in opposite directions.  One train was just above the other, but I noticed that if I cut the tie just right, I could have them side by side as you see them.  I added two more vintage men’s ties on both ends.  At 8 x 8 1/2 inches, this small decorative pillow is almost a square.

So why not choo-choo-choose this one-of-a-kind train pillow for yourself or a loved one.

Easter is a religious holiday for many people, but the weekend can also be fun, especially for parents of young children.  Dying eggs is a favorite pastime.  If you and your family like to dye your eggs, here’s a super crafting idea:

Tie Dyed Easter Eggs – Using Silk Neckties!

The PartyBluPrints Blog and Dollar Store Crafts page offer step-by-step instructions and beautiful photographs of eggs dyed using silk neckwear.

I read that the colors transfer most vibrantly when the eggs are boiled, but if you prefer pastel colors, microwaving is a better option.

Well, I started out as a crafter who turned ties into pillows. After giving it a go, I decided to use vintage ladies scarves for fabric as well.

That expanded into hand made sachets, both square shaped and necktie shaped. I fill them with lavender buds, balsam fir, and cedar wood.

I then branched off into the world of vintage ties, although in my travels  I come across  brand new neckties as well.  What I find is nothing short of amazing.  And it’s not over yet!
