Today is Saint Swithin’s Day!

Who was this guy? He was the Bishop of Winchester who died in 862 AD. Legend has it that on his deathbed he wanted to be buried in a place he would be constantly trodden on and rained on. His wish was granted, but in 971 AD the local monks moved him to an indoor shrine. There was supposedly a heavy rainstorm on this occasion or its anniversary, which spurred an old wives tale that however the weather is on Saint Swithin’s Day, so it will continue for the next 40 days.

Here is the folklore poem:

‘St. Swithin’s day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St. Swithin’s day if thou be fair
For forty days ’twill rain nae mair.’

(Note: dost = does, thou = you, and nae mair = no more)

That’s the special number to celebrate World Population Day, which is also known as the World Census Day.  The theme is “everyone counts” (every pun intended), and the day is observed every year on July 11th.

Here in the United States, “counting everyone is an integral part of ensuring that we take everyone into account. Good demographic data is critical for planning schools, health systems and public transportation, for designing policies based on future population projections, for monitoring the effectiveness of service delivery and much more. ” (Source: UNFPA.org)

This People Looking Upward Save the Children brand tie is based on the art of Marc LeBlanc, and I think it is a great tie to showcase for today’s holiday.  Which reminds me, I just created a new Save the Children Necktie page in the Designer Ties category. I love this line of neckwear because all of the ties are based on the art submitted to the company by children.  The name and age of the child as well as the title they give for their artwork is printed on the back.  Kids can really relate to the designs on these ties, and wearing them can encourage them to create their own masterpiece and send it in for consideration!

Solid Color Ties

Red, white and blue are the colors of the flag of the United States of America. Any solid color neckties in just one of these three colors is suitable. The color blue and navy blue are traditional and don’t go out of style. They even go with a multitude of shirts and suits. The color white is ideal for the spring and summer time months. The color red is among the most flexible of the three since it may be used on Feb. 14th for Valentine’s Day and during the Christmas holiday period in December. All three colors are may be used every single day, inside and out of the workplace.

Two Tone and Three Tone Ties

Merge any 2 or all three of the earlier mentioned colors with each other and you have your self a safe bet! The colors of the American flag are red and white stripes and blue and white stars, so that combination is the most identifiable, although people today will take pleasure in various other more unusual combinations of the three in stripes, polka dots, plaid and geometric motifs. For instance, red and white stars or blue and white stripes succeed extremely well. Several neckwear brands create a patchwork of all the many different permutations! As with solid color neckties, they tend to be conveniently adaptable for either professional and sociable environments.

Novelty Ties

By far the most obvious mens ties are generally those of flags, military logos, political parties, and almost any theme which represents freedom, democracy, and liberty for all. The elephant, donkey, Statue of Liberty, peace sign, prior and current Presidents of the U.S., Liberty Bell, Declaration of Independence, White House, and American eagle are usually all excellent ideas of  patriotic novelty ties that express patriotic and/or political themes. Often these ideas are shown in red, white and blue to leave no question that they are patriotic and to make them even more so.

In addition to each of the stated special occasions, the Democratic and Republican themed neck ties are also perfect for political rallies. Those of the American eagle can be used year round by lovers of wildlife as well as people interested in boosting efforts to conserve endangered species right here and throughout the world. Remember, however, that novelty neckties are best used in informal settings.
